The Devout Follower

My eyes roll dizzily at the sights of Ashish and Balenciaga , purple crocodile feels good under my thumbs. Forgive me. This world of fashion is pure in its honesty. So therefore am I. Tears fell when I had to leave my Lanvin shoes on a trip to New York. Fashion is my master. I am its unfortunate slave. It whips me and breaks me and I kiss its feet asking for more.

Fashion has been cruel to me. But I am a devout follower of this movement. I have worked in various positions, from sad-looking sales assistant to fashion editor and consultant. I will not conform to non-creative fields, so it’s a beautiful struggle up the hill to equilibrium.

Fashion unfortunately still lies in the eye of the beholder, people in this industry still scrutinize by attire. They assume you are completely incapable of doing a job as long as ‘they’ don’t know you. I dream of a world where fashion is available for all lovers of creation. Not just for people who have worked their way up because they donned the latest Balenciaga bag, so therefore were assumed to be in the know. I am looking forward to a day where your knowledge is the power. It also disheartens me to see customized t-shirts taking over on the catwalks. Give me Dior Haute Couture any day or Thierry Mugler circa 1990, when it was actually believed that Courrèges could be resurrected. The likes of Gareth Pugh, Ashish and Hussien Chalyan assure me that all is not lost. And please don’t sleep on Timothy Andrew James, he is the future!

My advice is to stay true to yourself in this industry. Don’t conform! You have to be ready to be used and abused, just take it with a pinch of a sadist salt and you will be fine. My ultimate dream? Well, for me to be sitting at the top of it all.
